Breaking The Sound Barrier: d/Deaf audience focus group on access to live music

Birds of Paradise Theatre (BOP) and Edinburgh International Festival are on the lookout for participants to join our focus group for d/Deaf audiences and access to live music.

BOP and Edinburgh International Festival are joining forces to make live music more accessible for d/Deaf audiences.

We all know how powerful live music can be, but for many d/Deaf audiences, that experience isn’t always as accessible as it should be.

That’s why we’re teaming up with Edinburgh International Festival to dig into what really works (and what doesn’t) when it comes to accessing live music, from rock gigs to classical concerts.

We don’t want to guess. We want to learn directly from your experiences, test new ideas, and take action. Together with access consultant Trudi Collier, we’ll be exploring and trialling new approaches to access such as BSL interpretation, captioning, or even new kinds of event formats shaped by what you tell us.

And that’s where you come in.

We’re running two focus groups for d/Deaf audiences to share your thoughts and ideas in a relaxed, friendly space:

In-person session
Monday 28 October, 6:00pm
The Hub, Edinburgh
(Refreshments provided)

Online session
November (date to follow)
BSL only – register your interest now

As a thank you for your time and insights, everyone who takes part will receive a £50 voucher.

Your feedback will directly shape how we build and test new access options for future Festival events, making live music more inclusive, more enjoyable, and more electrifying for everyone.
